Indigenous & Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) began the BC First Nations Solid Waste Program in 2008 to address the communities’ needs and challenges around recycling, composting and waste reduction. High transport costs lead remote communities to stockpile discarded appliances and vehicles. Stockpiles increase the risk of harmful pollutant release, and become costlier to dispose. In.tent Planning Inc. works with the BC First Nations Solid Waste Program providing planning advice, and helping them to set up systems and relationships with Regional Districts and service providers. One of the initiatives is to ensure operators receive training on looking after transfer stations for their communities, including proper removal of freon from refrigerators. On April 7, ABC Recycling Burnaby hosted 10 trainees from Takla Lake, Heiltsuk, Tahltan, Stswecem’c Xgat’tem, Lil’wat, and Kitkatla Nations to receive training from Ron Verch (Iceman Freon Extraction) on proper refrigerant disposal procedures. The following day, the trainees took the one-day freon removal course at BCIT. Core funding for the BC First Nations Solid Waste Program is provided by INAC, with additional support from many partners including ABC Recycling.
