CIT Railcars
CIT, a global railcar leasing company, partnered with ABC Recycling to responsibly decommission 48 end-of-life flat-body railcars from its aging fleet. The railcars were sourced from the Lower Mainland of British Columbia and transported to ABC Recycling’s Burnaby yard for processing. The project was executed over an 18-day period and required coordinated logistics, yard planning, and controlled dismantling activities to safely manage large rail assets.
Environmental protection and safety were integral to the decommissioning process. Prior to dismantling, each railcar underwent a thorough cleaning and washing process to remove residual materials and potential contaminants, ensuring compliance with environmental standards and reducing risk during processing. Decommissioning activities followed established safe work procedures, including controlled cutting, material segregation, and equipment-specific handling techniques designed for heavy rail infrastructure.
Over the course of the project, ABC Recycling efficiently dismantled all 48 railcars, recovering ferrous materials for recycling and diverting significant volumes of steel back into the supply chain. This project highlights ABC Recycling’s technical expertise in managing complex, large-scale rail decommissioning work and reinforces our ability to deliver safe, environmentally responsible end-of-life solutions for transportation and industrial assets—supporting the circular economy while meeting the operational needs of asset owners.
