Tundra Take-Back

2016

The Tundra Tak-Back project seeks to bring automotive and appliance recycling to communities in Canada’s remote regions. In 2016, ABC staff provided training on how to depollute end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) in Makkovik, in the Nunatsiavut region of Labrador. The team was able to successfully depollute 30 ELVs in the community. We also provided training in the Nunavik region of Quebec working on Tundra Take-Back Nunavik. ABC staff provided hands-on training in decommissioning end-of-life appliances, particularly how to remove the freon. The team was able to decommission 16 fridges and freezers as well as about 10 other white goods. The goal of the both projects was to build capacity in the community to be able to better manage bulky metal wastes.

ABC also donated a refrigerant extraction system to the Tundra Take-Back BC Training Initiative in Kitkatla, BC. This project is focusing on training the local waste management team to depollute ELVs and decommission appliances in order to support their waste management efforts.
